So, we had/have this favorite dressing from a popular brand and we were ordering cases of it and they were very expensive and we got to thinking…what’s in this incredibly delicious dressing that we love so much and can’t live without, anyway?
Turns out, not too much. Apple Cider Vinegar, Tamari, Sesame Oil, Sesame Seeds, and Olive Oil to be exact. Ok, that and shiitake mushroom bits but honestly they don’t really do much for the flavor as far as we can tell. And they used Canola Oil, which has no flavor whatsoever so why bother?
Here’s our version:
- 1/4 cup Apple Cider Vinegar
- 2-3 Tbsp Tamari
- 1/2 tsp Toasted Sesame Oil
- 1/4 cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil
- 1 Tbsp White Sesame Seeds
Whisk it all together and be transported the the Asian Pacific! Or, at least really enjoy a very nice salad anyway.
Usual disclaimer: our measurements change every time we make it – sometimes we like a little more Vinegar…sometimes a little more Tamari – so we’ve offered up a starting point here. We suggest you noodle around with it until it tastes just right to you.

Love the fact that you took a manufactured food (what we call a second-order food) and made a better and far cheaper version yourself at home. Congrats!
I also really like the not-quite profane title of the salad dressing too, you should trademark it!
Found your blog thanks to an article in yesterday’s Chicago Sun-Times–I’m enjoying catching up on what you’ve written!

Thanks for leaving us a comment, Dan.
We actually try to say things like ‘no shiitake’ pretty frequently around here in an attempt to not poison the mind of our blossoming 1 year old daughter. Unfortunately, we forget as often as we remember…
Thanks for the tip about the Chicago Sun-Times, too! Probably never would’ve known otherwise…
Cheers!
